It’s worth mentioning that Italy is the third largest economy in the euro zone. It has a highly-diversified economy and the industrial component of its economy is prevalent, compared to its neighbors, with as much as 20 % of the gross value added. This industry is based essentially on manufacturing of high quality consumer goods, and Italy is considered the fifth world manufacturing power. The industrial sector produces machineries and equipment, metallurgy followed by the food industry and the leading sectors of the Made in Italy: textiles, leather and clothing. The tourism sector represents about 10% of the GDP, making Italy the 5th world touristic destination. Agriculture represents about 2% of the GDP.  Italy is also characterized by an important presence of family-owned industries, which include large emblematic groups that are completed by a very large network of small and medium-size enterprises that are the genuine flag carriers of Italian know-how. Often organized within “industrial districts”, these SMEs represent the strength of the Italian economic system thanks to their dynamism, the high degree of capital intensity, the strong openness to technical progress, the targeted and tailor-made production and the significant part of their export activity.
