Italy Commits €360 Million to Modernize Greece’s Railway Network
Italy’s state-owned railway company, Ferrovie dello Stato, has pledged to invest €360 million in modernizing passenger rail transport in Greece, as part of a new agreement signed with the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
Ferrovie dello Stato, which owns Hellenic Train—Greece’s primary rail operator—will fund the procurement of 23 new trains, including eight high-speed intercity trains and 15 suburban trains. The investment also includes the construction of modern depots to support long-term fleet maintenance and operations.
These commitments will be formally outlined in a revised contract between the Ministry and Hellenic Train, which will include binding clauses regarding implementation timelines.
The deal coincides with the Greek government’s recent launch of €400 million in tenders aimed at upgrading the country’s railway infrastructure.
The initiative comes amid increased public pressure following the 2023 Tempe rail tragedy, which claimed 57 lives and sparked widespread protests calling for reforms and improvements to Greece’s railway safety and infrastructure.
